From the MEGA Session at SMX Advanced 2009, seasoned vets discuss the importance of content to SEO. I honestly thought Vanessa Fox would lead the answer to this question with the typical “Content is King” pitch, but instead she kicked off the reply with the importance of site architecture and search engine-friendliness.
The panelists, including Greg Boser, Bruce Clay, Vanessa Fox, Todd Friesen (Oilman), Rae Hoffman, Stephan Spencer, and Brett Tabke all seemed to agree that great content without links pointing to it won’t magically produce ranking, that there has to be both great content and votes (links) to secure ranking. The “Oilman” Todd Friesen jokes that you can still rank by over-optimizing and linking without really good quality content, but was quickly followed by Boser who reminded everyone that it does take good content to sustain longer page views (lower bounce rates) and ultimately longevity at the top of the search results.
